Title: Riding the X-ray Wave: Some Personal Reflections
Speaker: Dr Stephen Wilkins, Chief Research Scientist, CSIRO Materials Science & Engineering
Abstract: When I joined CSIRO in 1975, X-ray science had already achieved a great deal; however, there were few signs of the exciting and in some cases momentous developments that would occur in X-ray science over the subsequent three and a half decades.
The present talk will offer a few highlights from a personal interest in and association with some aspects of these developments. These developments include: novel methods of structure determination, new instruments and methods for the exploitation of synchrotron sources and novel methods for X-ray imaging that incorporate phase contrast (i.e., refractive effects) with X-rays.
A theme in this talk will be to try to show how relatively simple, but somewhat abstract, concepts in science, such as the ability to measure information content in a system and also some basic properties relating to the propagation of radiation, can have profound practical implications in such areas as biomedical imaging and in determining the structure of materials and molecules.
There will be occasion to reflect on the vagaries of the scientific review process and the manner in which the organization and leadership of science have changed over this period, at least in so far as I have experienced.
Light refreshments will be served after the Lecture.
