Dr Marshall was a highly respected, Western Australia-born scientist, best known for his work in soil physics. He lead the Soil Physics Section of the then CSIR Soils Division and sat for years as the division's Acting Chief.

 

He was a distinguished scientist, writer and leader in his field, and in 2000 was awarded an Order of Australia.

He served as President of the Australian Society of Soil Science, as Vice President of the Soil Physics Commission and as President of the Technology Commission. He is the author of a number of published works including Relations Between Water and Soil (1959) and the leading text Soil Physics (1979).
