Play your part and win a prize in the naming competition for Australia's next marine research vessel.

Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, announced a naming competition during the launch of the project to build the new vessel.

"It is my pleasure today to launch a national competition giving every Australian their chance to suggest a name for our most important new platform for scientific research," said Senator Carr.

"It might be a name with an Australian flavour, or a name that emphasises the vessel’s role in discovery, but I don’t want to be prescriptive about this.

"After all, this vessel is a major investment in Australian creativity."

Entries are invited in three categories: primary students, secondary students and everyone else and will close on 1 December 2009. The grand prize will be the chance to design and possibly perform your own experiment on the new ship. www.csiro.au/resources/float-a-name
