We were saddened to learn that Dr. Alf Howard died on Tuesday, 6th July 2010 at the age of 104. Dr Howard was the last survivor of Mawson's expedition.
Dr Howard was the Chief Scientist of the CSIRO Meat Research Laboratory at Cannon Hill and retiredi n 1971 after forty years with the organisation.
Dr Howard graduated B.Sc. in chemistry in 1926 and M.Sc. in 1928 from the University of Melbourne. In 1929 he accompanied Sir Douglas Mawson to the Antarctic as a hydrologist with the British Australian New Zealand Research Expedition. He joined CSIRO on his return to Australia in 1931, working first at the Irrigation Research laboratory at Griffith. During the war he transferred to the Division of Food Preservation and Transport to work on the preservation of meat and vegetables by dehydration. Later he moved to Brisbane where his work on the complex interrelation of chemistry and psychology in interpreting flavour differences led to the award of a Ph.D. degree in psychology in 1968. In 1993 the University of Queensland awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Science and in 1998 Alf became a Member of the Order of Australia.
Dr Howard had a long association with the University of Queensland as a student, part-time lecturer, research fellow and honorary research consultant in the Schools of Psychology and Human Movement Studies since 1971 and only retired in 2003. However, he continued visiting Brisbane schools until he was 100, meeting with children eager to learn more about Mawson's expedition and Antarctica.
Alf's funeral service will be at 2-30pm on Friday 9th July, in the EAST CHAPEL, Mt Thompson Crematorium, Nursery Rd, Holland Park, Brisbane.
