Volunteers needed - Scientists in Schools WA
Thursday, 5 May 2011
Due to the success of the Scientists in Schools program we are looking for around 50+ volunteers in WA to help with the program.
An opportunity for you as a CSIRO alumnus to play a further part in Australia's future
Do you want to inspire and motivate school students to pursue their interests in science?
Do you want to help teachers enhance science education in their classrooms?
It's as easy as:
A. Talking about your work and career, or
B. Occasional classroom visits to help out with hands-on activities/practical classes, or
C. Mentoring school students with their research projects and/or providing suggestions and input to teachers (much of this could occur via email/phone).
Scientists in Schools is a national program that creates and supports thousands ofon-going partnerships betweena teacher anda scientist. As the scientist, you can indicate the year level (reception to Year 12),you might want tonominate a particular teacher or school, and you can decidehow much time you will spend. You can visit one a week or once a year– it's entirely up to you. But never underestimate the impact of your involvement in attracting students into the sciences.
Our program is open to graduate research students, retired scientists and people in applied science professions such as engineering and medicine. Our Mathematicians in Schools program caters for mathematical professionals.
