It is with sadness we advise that Dr Gordon Crewther died on Monday 28
November 2011. Gordon worked for CSIRO for almost 40 years, having
started on 23 November 1943 and finished on 14 November 1983. For the
last eight years of his career he was the Chief of the Division of
Protein Chemistry. He was an outstanding scientist who made seminal
contributions to our understanding of the structure of the wool fibre
and its constituent proteins. He was a wonderful leader who cared deeply
for the welfare of his staff and maintained an interest in the lab long
after his retirement in 1983.
Dr Crewther was
born on 15 November 1918. He completed secondary school at Kyneton High
School in 1934 and from here went on to the University of Melbourne
where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) with 1st
Class Honours in 1940. He also completed a MSc degree again with 1st
Class Honours with a a thesis titled 'The Nature of Enzyme Action'.
Following a
short period with the Victorian Department of Agriculture he joined
CSIR. He was recognised for his scientific achievements with a number of
awards but as described by Dr. Colin Ward, it was his leadership and
care of his staff that he is remembered for. Further details of his
life and career can be found at: www.csiropedia.csiro.au
Gordon's funeral service was held at St Michael's
Uniting Church, 120 Collins Street, Melbourne at 11.00 am on Friday 2
